Assignment Task 29.2 Styles, Conventions and Techniques of a music video

A) Briefly define the following conventions of a music video in your own words and the effect they may illustrate your points.

Lyric interpretation
this is when the listener is trying to understanding the lyrics of the song and whether they have a deeper meaning they should be trying to define, for example, an old school R&B love song would have a serious meaning to it literal or not, whereas a hip hop song in todays society would have basic literal meanings without the listener having to figure it out.

Extending or consolidating a songs meaning
this is when a songs lyrics have a deeper meaning that what was first thought, sometimes the reason for this is the lyrics aren't clear and so there will be a music video for the song with a narrative/storyline. the effect of having lyrics and visual aids help the audience understand the deeper meaning of the song which would make the song more enjoyable for the audience.

focus on performer
this is when an artist would have to stand out more than anyone else on the in the video for their own promotion for a single album etc. this would be achieved by the main artist being dressed in a specific type of clothing or by being the only one in parts of the music video to give themselves more attention.

lighting for mood
this effect is also used in film as well \s music videos and is called mis-en-scene. this is where the artists emotions or the emotion the song is supposed to give you is helpfully portrayed by the light and darkness of the video. dark colours like blacks, dark reds, dark blues are usually associated with rap or rock videos which would associate violence and horror scenes. Bright colours like white, yellow and pink are usually associated with hip hop and pop videos which are cheerful in look and sound.

Allusion
this is also know as a reference and artists use these in their videos to hint at other things either in the music word, such as a diss track from one rapper to another, or about events in society that have a negative effect on people. An example of this is in Michael Jacksons Earth song which is about extinction of all other living things besides humans which humans have caused which is still relevant today.

B) Give an example of a music video which shows the following.

Special effects\green screen: Donell Jones "U know whats up"

Multi-image: Byonce "Countdown"

Cutting to the beat: Skippa da flippa "fresher than me".

Artist miming and lip-syncing to a playback track: Rae Sremmurd "No flex zone"

Animation: lil dicky "Professional rapper".

Reference to or includes another artist: Rej3ctz "Cat Daddy" starring Chris Brown.

C) Briefly define the following styles of a music video in your own words and give an example of it being applied in an existing music video.

An illustrative music video is a video where the visuals refer to the literal meaning of the song. Eminem "Cleanin' out my closet"

An interpretative music video is a video that makes the audience think about the deeper meaning of the song and how the video relates. Tory Lanez "Say it"

A surrealist video is when the video has obscene and strange imagery throughout to make the video which can make it seem like a dream.  A$AP Rocky "L$D (LOVE x $EX x DREAMS)"

A pastiche or homage in a music video is when the artist dedicates the song to someone e.g a family member or another artist. Young Thug "F Cancer" starring Lil Boosie

An as-live video is when the artist or groups official video is when they are filmed performing the song on stage. Eminem "Sing for the moment"

A parody video is when the artist is mimicking or making fun of the original song another artist made. Bart Baker -Taylor Swift "Blank Space"

An animation video is when the artist official music video is completely animated. Fatman Scoop "Be faithful"

Assignment Task 29.2 Styles, Conventions and Techniques of a music video Script

Migos "One time"
Special effects: In the Migos one time video, panoramic special effects are used which make it seem that a artist is leaving a trail of images behind as they move around the mansion. This is also and example of multi-imagery.

Focus on performers. Because the Migos are a group and although the have their separate verses in the song, there is barely any shots of the artists individually, however, the specific artist will always be closer to the camera  or standing in the centre of the group while the other two dance and mime the lyrics in the background.

Camera tech: wide shots are used for majority of the scenes and also for when the rappers are king around the manision in-pausing the people and objects
Focus on performers: although each of the artists have their own verses, there are no shown in a specific way when the narrative of them walking around is shown, however, when each of the rappers verse starts, the clips with the group together, the specific artist is shown closer to the camera while the other two dance or mime the lyrics in the background

Migos say sum
lighting: the shots from this video, even when it was shot at night are always brightly lit with either the vibrant colours of the sun reflecting off the clothes of the people in the shot or the well positioned background lights, this effect is to symbolise hapiness throughout the video between the selected people in the shot

Lyric interpretation: the lyrics from this song are very different from the regular type of lyrics they use. For this song, they use lyrics that mean something else and that connect with the rappers real emotions which can also relate to the audience with these lyrics being about having a romantic relationship with someone they care about.

Extended song meaning: this songs meaning is ok correlation to the lyric interpretation as they both involve the style being different and the context of the song that it is a love song but could also be a message to these three rappers true inyentions and aspirations

Schoolboy Q ft Kanye west THat part
Lighting: This whole video is very dimly lit with most of the video being recorded with dark coloured camera filters. Some of the scenes are referenced to places where rappers with disposable money go e.g strip clubs. these scene are shown when schoolboy Q is performing his first verse and also when Kanye is walking through the house we see a room lit with a red lightbulb which is also a reference to brothels rappers go to.

Camera tech: the main focus from this video is Kanyes part where the camera follows Schoolboy Q to the front of a house for Kanye to answer it reciting his lyrics and then the camera follows him through the bottom floor of the house as he dances through the house and see an example of the lighting effect. Theo scene ends when the tour of the house by Kanye is finished and he shows the audience out the door.

Homage: The reference in this video is seen when Kanye rand in front of a bus and freestyles. When the lyrics and properly heard and understood we hear Kanye say "Get Top dog on the phone". This is a reference to schoolboy Q's friend and famous rapper Kendrick Lamar's iconic line from "untitled unmastered". When the video ends- number is shown on screen(1-800-351-1132). In America, when this number was called, - voice mail was played saying "hello billy, its top dawg. Leave a message and I might call you back". This finished off the reference to Kendrick lamars lyrics to Top dawg

Styles, Conventions and Techniques of a music video lesson

style:
depend on the genre
features. colour locations, performance, narrative, sexual or violent content, image of musician, representation(gender, age etc), humour, editing, lighting.

video-pop: bright lighting, mainly shots of the artist, storyline is her friends having a party, age relation is early 20's, the shots are moved from a house to a beach.

video-rap/hip-hop: shots of the artists in a lowrider with hydraulic suspension, shots of the artists with a group around then with more lowrider cars

video-rock/heavy metal: shots similar to a horror movie, violent sounding withs the artists wearing scaring masks. location is in a forest

Style1- "in concert" would be on stage footage of the artists
style2- animation, used mainly as a storytelling techniques or just to represent the band in a better image.
style3- illustrated narrative music video is the visuals will be a literal representation of the lyrics, the lyrics and the visuals have a strong bond. Interpretive music video encourages the audience to speculate a deeper meaning between the visuals and the lyrics which are not obvious at first
style4- narrative video is how the video communicates the story with the audience
style5- surrealism is art movement which breaks down boundaries between fantasy, dream and reality. this would use bizarre and jarring imagery creating a dream-like quality which will be memorable to the audience.
style6- pastiche or homage is a paying a tribute from one media to the other e.g a music video for a movie.
style7- parody is making fun of or mocking another song

Assignment Task 29.1- Purposes Of A Music Video

PURPOSES OF MUSIC VIDEO: Kareem Binns
Promotion of a particular song:
The purpose of a music video can be to promote the artist(s) by gaining publicity through widespread talk of the artist(s) video and their actions or the visuals in the video. The purpose of a music video could also be for promoting a producer, e.g Metro Boomin being shouted out by Future(artist) at the beginning of one of his songs, "If Young Metro don't trust you, I'm gone shoot you". This is an announcement to the audience that Metro Boomin, also know as Young Metro, produced this song. The reason for this would be for people listening to recognise who Metro Boomin is and when listening to the song, see if they like it which would get them to listen to more music with Metro Boomin as the producer. Sometimes, there will be a collaboration involving two or more artist which would help the publicity and promoting of all the artists on the single e.g "Low Life" by Future ft Weekend, where Metro Boomin is also mentioned.

Promotion of the artist's album:

The way a music video could promote an artists album is having a single taken from the album, with many other artists featuring on that one track, who will be featured or producing throughout in the album to make an appearance in one video then after the album as well as video are released, all the artists and producers would mention on social media that they are featuring in a video along with the album, involving another particular artist. This publicity on social media would get people to watch the video, then follow up on finding the album, or in some cases a mixtape, and download or buy it. This video "All in" by Lil Yachty and the Sailing Team is an example of producers and different artists collaborating on one track for Lil Yachtys mixtape "Summer Songs 2".
The artists involved in this video include Lil Yachty, Byou, Kay the Yacht, Burberry Perry, BIGBRUTHACHUBBA, Soop, JBan$, K $upreme and Kodie Shane. In this case, the video was not only for promotion of Lil Yachtys mixtape, Summer Songs 2 , but also his "The Boat Show" tour, in which the Sailing team was also involved in as his opening acts or in collaborations e.g Kay The Yacht or performing their own songs e.g Kodie Shane and Byou or performing this group song "All in"

Promotion of a particular artist:
The way a music video could promote a particular artist is it could be a new artists debut song and also an introduction to their debut album. This example is seen all over the world, one of the biggest examples of this is Fetty wap, who's debut of "Trap Queen" on 7 August 2014 went viral all over the world and got over 5million views in the first week while also hitting top charts. "Trap Queen" on youtube still has views, likes and comments till this day even after 2 years.

Promotion of a synergy:
the main purpose for promotion of synergy is for two areas of media to work in conjunction with each other for an overall bigger profit for both parties. For example a song will be used such as 'Ride Out' to help promote the film Fast and Furious 7. This song was on the official soundtrack an done of the official song used to promote the film. the song has interesting aspects from editing such as 'cutting to the beat' which is determined by the songs tempo. The music video like this would has clips of the movie throughout, then cut back to the artists in the video. this is a good example of synergy because the mixture of media ,being the movie franchise and the music labels, would bring more publicity to all the artists, their labels because of their sales and also to the movie franchise. the artists were also cut in and out of the video in-between the clips from the movie when there is a beat drop to give emphasise to the drama happening in the movie clips to give the effect of the artists being involved in the movie not just the video. This can be seen from the first few seconds of the video where one of the artists is cut out and replaced by one of the actors.

Increase income for the record company:

All record labels produce and promote different types of music and in their own way. some record labels can create artists that become viral and get their label know to bring in more artists to bring in further income. A big example of this is Quality Controls most successful artists Migos. Migos have also form their own label Young Rich Nation, which now work with Quality Control and created big artists like Rich the kid, Skippa da flippa and Lil Yachty who are all well known. Migos bring revenue to the label by saying it at the beginning of their songs and showing the camera that are filming their videos, their multiple gold chains with one specific being a big circle with the initials QC representing Quality Control.
This Video also features 2 other members of  the label Quality Control, Rich the kid and Skippa da Flippa, with one of the Migos rapping and the other 2 seen throughout.

Increasing the range of media the artist is active in:
A music video increase an artists media is by placing them with big products and a big artist to increase their media. a good example of this is Rich the kid and Jaden Smith with "Like This"
in this video, Jaden Smith who isn't really a big rapper is paired with Rich the kid to bring both their social status' up. they way they do this is by having Jaden Smith who is known as an actor rapping in a song and fro people to talk about it and question why he is rapping. They also mentions Tesla cars in the video and have then in the background, this is to maybe boost sales with Tesla and get more people to notice them.

Lesson 2: Music Videos from different eras
15/09/16

1925 sweet georgia brown- filmed in black and white, very animated and upbeat sound. it also shows the musicians playing the song live with a conductor leading them. the camera was constantly on the the band and didn't move.

1929 st. louis blues- filmed in black and white with visuals of the artist singing with background singing. sad and slow sounding which would imply the artists sorrow.

1950 jailhouse rock-filmed in black and white, upbeat song telling a story about dancing in jail. the artist is seen dancing throughout the video on set of a jail prop wall with backup dancers dressed as jail mates and police.

1960 Don't look back- part 1:light background music and two men talking about the production of the music video while playing the video which consisted of a man holding up cards with words on it relating to the video.
part 2: the music video is of a man with cards and the words are of the last few words of the artist singing. this is an introduction to lyrics.

1966 strawberry fields forever- in colour, lots of different shots. they also had different techniques like having different times of day, going from midday to the night.

1970 bohemian rhapsody- the video is in colour and is just the artist close u; shots of their face and them singing the song. it then changes into shots form a floor view of a stage and the artists playing their song with more shots of them with a slow sound. it then changes into am opera the into a rock song with multiple shots changing constantly of the artists including close-ups, stage views and the artists in a group.

1970 jocko homo- not sure what to say

1980 ashes to ashes- very slow, in colour and only to sets, one being in the desert and maybe ment to look like an alien planet to the artist sitting in the dark by himself.

1990 wannabe-

Lesson 1: Music Video 14/09/16

MV1: The purpose of this video is to promote the artist and to promote the song by creating dance to go with this specific style of music.

MV2: The purpose of this video is to promote the artists album by giving the video an interesting storyline that interacts with the viewers. this video also increases the artists range of media by getting the world talking about his video. The video could also be a subliminal message to people watching and the "monsters" seen and spoken of could be a representation of something else.

MV3: The purpose of this video is to promote the artists album and to tell a story about parts of his life and his opinions on his views of society and how people are trying to be like him but stating there is only one. this could be a message to new rappers and a warning not to repeat what he does. Also this video obviously shows how the artist doesn't care about peoples opinion on his decisions and says how he is brave enough to say what he says about society/the media and be blasé about it.

Drakes "Hotline Bling" got massive publicity through TV, social media and radio by incorporating a good beat  and simplistic lyrics with interesting dance moves throughout the video that overall turned into a catchy song that is widely recognised through multiple groups of people. the song hit top charts within the first week of being releases but however, Drake did not have a video released with the song and so the song was never played on youtube or on TV until a few weeks of being on the top charts.
